Enhance started to run courses for its cleaners in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in 2017. Initially the intention was to run an English for cleaning course, but we quickly realised that our cleaners needs were far broader. We therefore changed the course content to include the language skills one might need to access a library, shop, bank or doctors.
Courses are run by the Evelyn Oldfield Unit and aim to teach English to those who have low-level language skills. The courses last between 4 – 6 weeks and normally take place on Saturday mornings, when most cleaners have time off. The main aim of the course is to raise people’s confidence, reduce isolation and allow people to make new friends and connections in their area. Thus encouraging them to continue improving their English. At the end of the course, students are presented with a £25 Sainsbury’s voucher, together with information on further free-of-charge ESOL courses.
