Extraordinary times call for extraordinary people.
Thank Your Cleaner Day gave us at Enhance the ideal opportunity to recognise the hard work that cleaners do and to let them know they are valued and appreciated. Cleanliness and hygiene is important for everyone’s welfare, and is the key to reducing the risk of infection in the workplace.
On Wednesday, 21st October 2020, Enhance’s management team braved the wet weather to go out in person and thank our fantastic cleaning staff for the essential job that they do. Our managers walked a total of 60 kilometres across London, made 50 journeys by bus, train and tube and spent 15 hours from 5.00am through to 8.00pm visiting different client sites in the Capital to greet and thank our cleaners face-to-face (all with face coverings and appropriate social distancing in place of course!).
Cleaning is one of the most important industries in the world, yet most of the people undertaking this vital work are often not seen or particularly valued by the people using the buildings. Every day in the UK, tens of thousands of dedicated and hard-working cleaning staff are onsite to ensure buildings are cleaned and ready to go for the next day. Cleaners work day, night and weekends to keep environments clean, safe and hygienic. Often working anti-social hours they are hard at work whilst most people are safely tucked up in bed or at home.
The COVID-19 pandemic has been an anxious time for cleaners worried about the safety of their working environments and job security. Many have continued working right the way through the pandemic and during lock-down, maintaining a sensible and pragmatic approach towards their own safety and those of others whilst observing all the government guidelines. Despite being considered in many cases essential workers the government has not afforded them the same privileges as those occupations with ‘official’ Key Worker status.
All of this makes it even more important that cleaners are properly recognised. Sandy Aird, Enhance’s Managing Director says; “We thanked as many of our staff as possible in person last Wednesday and all our staff received a text message expressing our gratitude. This was without doubt the most worthwhile day of the whole year”.
